Upgrade Available: Julia Christensen in conversation with Tom Hall and Laetitia Sonami

Conversation between Fulcrum Arts’s AxS Incubator Resident Julia Christensen and programmer Tom Hall, moderated by artist, researcher, and educator Laetitia Sonami. The three artists—united in their investigations into sonic translation—discuss what it means to engage the physical world in electronic music and art, with particular attention to Christensen’s Tree of Life project in the context of concerns she explored in her book Upgrade Available.

Conduct Matters: Twitch Performance by Jeanine Oleson with performers Beth Griffith, Lisa Reynolds, and Diwa Tamrong

Jeanine Oleson’s 2020 Kitchen Broadcast was timed with the release of the book Conduct Matters. For her presentation for Kitchen Broadcast, Oleson and ongoing collaborators and performers Beth Griffith, Lisa Reynolds, and Diwa Tamrong use the space of the screen to reexamine language and ideas about subject and alienation, working to find ways the screen might be an embodied site for performance. Conduct Matters presents Oleson’s ongoing, sharply absurdist response to research on the ways copper is produced and used in 21st-century capitalism. By exploring conduction as a material, political, musical, and ethical phenomenon in collaboration with an ensemble cast (Beth Griffith, Lisa Reynolds, and Diwa Tamrong, alongside Oleson) who take the production cycle of copper as the ground to examine communication, technology, and the sensory, Oleson tackles issues of labor, the environment, craft, and performance with humor, pathos, and intellectual rigor.

Jeanine Oleson is an interdisciplinary artist working with images, materiality and language, which she forms into complex and humorous objects, images, videos, and performances. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rutgers University, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Oleson has exhibited and performed at various national and international venues. She published two books about performance projects in 2012, “What?” and “The Greater New York Smudge Cleanse.” She is also a lead collaborator since 2013 on a participatory project, “Photo Requests from Solitary” that provides images to people held in solitary confinement and supports advocacy efforts to end the practice in US prisons. Oleson teaches at Rutgers University and lives in Brooklyn, NY.

For LAABF 2020, Oleson had planned to present a performative talk to launch her book Conduct Matters, an extension of her 2017 exhibition and performances at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In place of this live program, the artist, contributors, and publishers—Jeanine Oleson, Connie Butler, Jaleh Mansoor, K-Sue Park, Karen Kelly, and Barbara Schroeder—host a virtual conversation to discuss the use of materials, language, and ethics in the project and subsequent book.

Julia Christensen hosts a virtual panel discussion on Upgrade Available. The multimedia presentation centers on how relentless “upgrade culture”—the perceived notion that one needs to constantly upgrade our electronics to remain relevant—fundamentally impacts our experience of time. Panelists include Aria Dean, editor and curator at Rhizome, and Jessica Gambling, LACMA archivist. Part of LACMA’s virtual Earth Day festivities, this event emphasizes the environmental focus of Christensen’s work, as well as the planetary science that her collaborators from JPL brought into her practice.

Before Pictures: Douglas Crimp in conversation with Yvonne Rainer, Silas Riener, and Adrian Danchig-Waring @ The Kitchen

In this program, art historian and critic Douglas Crimp reads chapters from his memoir Before Pictures that relate his encounters with performance art and dance in New York during the 1970s—Merce Cunningham, George Balanchine, disco, and more. Crimp is then joined in spirited conversation with a stellar cast of interlocutors, including Judson Dance Theater founder, filmmaker, and choreographer Yvonne Rainer; choreographer and former Cunningham dancer Silas Riener; and New York City Ballet principal dancer Adrian Danchig-Waring. Before Pictures: Juliane Rebentisch in conversation with Douglas Crimp at the Whitney Museum of American Art

Berlin-based philosopher Juliane Rebentisch visits New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art to discuss Before Pictures with its author. In this exchange, Crimp reflects on his first decade in New York City, from 1967 to 1977, and his endeavor to “weave together stories of the two cultures that were most important in my life at the time—gay liberation and the art that came to be called postmodernist.” Hosted by the Whitney Museum of American Art.
